Patch testing is a simple but important process that helps ensure your skin agrees with the product you're about to use. Here's everything you need to know about patch testing, why it's crucial, and what to do if your skin reacts.
Why Patch Testing Matters
Even the most gentle, high-quality products can cause irritation or allergic reactions in certain individuals. This doesn’t mean the product is “bad” or faulty, our skin is as unique as our fingerprint, and everyone reacts differently to ingredients.
Patch testing gives you a safe and controlled way to see how your skin responds before applying the product to your entire face or body. It can help you avoid widespread irritation and gives your skin the respect it deserves.
How to Patch Test Correctly
- Choose the Right Area
- Select the right area - a discreet, sensitive area such as behind your ear, on the side of your neck, or the inside of your elbow.
- Apply a Thin Layer
- Use a clean finger or cotton swab to apply a small amount, you don’t need much!
- Wait 24-48 Hours
- Keep the area clean and avoid washing it for best results. Observe your skin during this time.
- Look for Reactions
- Signs of a potential sensitivity include redness, itching, swelling, or bumps. If none of these occur after 48 hours, you're likely good to go!
What If There’s a Reaction?
If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, rinse the area gently with lukewarm water and stop using the product immediately. We recommend applying a soothing product like aloe vera or speaking with a healthcare professional, especially if the reaction is persistent or severe.
Please note: a reaction does not mean the product is defective. As with foods, fabrics, or pollen, individual allergies or sensitivities are natural and vary from person to person. Our formulations are tested and crafted with care, but we always recommend a patch test to ensure the product is right for your unique skin.
Patch testing might feel like a small step, but it's a powerful way to care for your skin - and your peace of mind. Taking just a day or two to test can save you discomfort later, and helps you get the most out of your new beauty routine.
